Wine Teran

Wine Teran

Pliny the Elder, a Roman historian born in 23 AD, wrote about Teran production in his work Naturalis Historia, consisting of 37 books. He mentions that the Karst red wine was not only known to Romans, but to Greeks as well, under the name of "praetorian wine of the Northern Adriatic".
Caesar Augustus' wife Julia attributed her high age of 82 to regular consumption of the so called pucinium which was produced on stone hills near the river Timavo spring. Valvasor, the famous Slovene polymath, describes the economic importance of the wine for the Karst region in his work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola.

King's family

The beautiful village of Hruševica lies hidden behind a pine grove only two kilometers southwest of Štanjel. The Grča family has lived here since the village was formed several centuries ago. They are also known as the King's family, because one of the family members who served in the army at the time of Napoleon came home dressed in such fine clothes that the local people said he looked like a king. Therefore the Grča Inn, where Ivo and his wife Pavla started working in 1967, is also known as ''the King's'' inn.
One of the meanings of the word 'grča' is a strong and vigorous person, which is exactly what the Grča family members are like. Since the beginning they have been farmers and they still haven't given up farming. In addition to running the inn, the farm owner Ivo, together with his wife Pavla and their son Bogdan, takes care of a large vinyard which provides grapes for the so-called Carst blood or Teran as well as other sorts of wine.
A monument to Srečko Kosovel, an important Slovenian poet, is a reminder of the inn's rich history. The inn housed the 2xGO gallery a few years ago, when it provided exhibition space for works of a number of artists from both the old and new Gorica. It was also a place where participants of the Vilenica international literary festival gathered every year. Among other prominent guests were Pen Club members with their leader Ciril Kosmač. The Grča family wishes to offer their guests more than just delicious home made food and drinks

Prosciutto room

The owner Ivo cures prosciutto in the inn's curing chamber just as his father did before him.
This way prosciutto turns into a delicious culinary delight.
The prosciutto is perfectly ripened also due to the bora wind, which creates ideal climatic conditions for prosciutto curing.
Guests can try the cured prosciutto at the Grča Inn or buy it in a gift box together with Grča wines.

Teran
Karst Teran (PTP- Recognized Traditional Denomination) is a high-quality red wine. It is produced in the Karst region from the Refošk grape vine (which is also called 'teranovka'). The Karst soil gives it a distinctive taste, and, compared to other wines, it has a high percentage of lactic acid. The homeland of Karst Teran lies between the Gulf of Trieste and Vipavska dolina valley. Its altitude is about 300m, and its soil is rich in silicates and iron. All these conditions give the wine a full taste, good acidity and high extract. In order to experience all these characteristics fully, serve Teran at 14 – 18 degrees Celsius in a large wine glass. Teran and prosciutto are a classic combination, but there are other possibilities: red meat, pork and sausage, dried meat products, grilled and barbecued meat dishes; it even makes a good combination with pizza. It is a wholesome wine, as it contains many ingredients that have positive effects on the human body. Teran does not age well, therefore it is best used within one year after production. However, the Grča family sticks to ''the older the better'' rule - the family is one of the few producers (if not the only one) that leave Teran to mature a bit longer in order to perfect its flavor and quality..

Vitovska Grganja
Vitovska grganja is a traditional white wine of the Primorska region. The grape vine grows on the Karst Plateau and in the Vipavska dolina valley. While it was known only by a few enthusiasts a couple of decades ago – the Grča family was among the first to produce it- it has become more popular in recent years in Slovenia. In the Italian part of Karst, where the wine has not been forgotten, Vitovska Grganja and Teran are synonyms for Karst wines.
Vitovska Grganja is an indigenous Karst white wine that used to be mixed with other varieties of white wine and named White Karst Wine. Since 2000 it has been produced as a single-variety wine, and its popularity keeps growing every year.
The must is cooked together with grape skins for at least two days. After that the Vitovska wine matures in barrels for a year.
It is a dry wine, golden yellow in colour with a quite intense bouquet. A strong bitter almond taste is characteristic of the Vitovska. The acid is pleasant and gives freshness to the wine.
The Vitovska wine is suitable for aging in wooden barrels.
It complements fish dishes and light meat dishes perfectly.
Oggi la Vitovska è, oltre al Terrano, sinonimo di vino carsico.

Teran liqueur
The king of liqueurs, it is definitely the most popular among them all. And the King's are the first producers of this king of liqueurs! The main ingredient of Teran liqueur is Teran wine, to which we add spices and seasonings (cinnamon, cloves) and brandy to increase the alcohol content.
The Teran liqueur goes perfectly with Karst štruklji roll, pancakes and apple or cheese strudel.
